Okay, I’m going to say something you probably already know… Your child is capable of more than they show you. 😄 Not always willingly. Not always quickly. But capable.
The “I Can’t” That Really Means “I Don’t Want To”
You’ve probably heard it:
“I can’t put my shoes on.”
“I can’t clean this up.”
“I need help.”
And sometimes… they really do. But a lot of the time? They’re testing if you’ll do it for them
What We See at School
At school, it’s a little different.
Children:
- put their things away
- follow routines
- complete small tasks
- try things on their own
Not perfectly. But they try. Because the expectation is there.
Independence Builds Confidence (Even When They Resist It)
When a child does something on their own, even something small—you can see it.
That little moment of:
“I did it.”
That matters more than we think.
Start Small (And Expect Some Pushback 😄)
You don’t need to hand over everything at once.
Just pick a few things:
- putting on shoes
- cleaning up toys
- carrying their own bag
And stay consistent. They might complain. They might stall. They might suddenly forget how their arms work. That’s part of it.
Let Them Try (Even If It Takes Longer)
It will take longer at first. It might feel easier to just do it yourself. But over time, it shifts. They get faster, more confident. more willing.
Before Summer Comes
Summer tends to loosen structure again. So this is a good time to build a little independence before that shift happens. Nothing big. Just small things, done consistently.
