Preschool Sleep Tips: How Much Rest Do They Really Need?
Preschoolers (ages 3–5) are busy growing, learning, and exploring and getting enough sleep is essential to support their development, behavior, and emotional well-being. Here’s what you need to know:
How Much Sleep Do Preschoolers Need?
Most preschoolers need
- 10–13 hours of total sleep every 24 hours
- This includes overnight sleep and naps
- Some may begin dropping naps around age 5, but quiet rest time is still important
Bedtime Basics
- Consistent bedtime: Aim for the same time each night, even on weekends
- Ideal bedtime: Between 7:00–8:00 p.m.
- Keep wake-up times consistent to set their internal clock
Healthy Sleep Habits
- Create a calm bedtime routine
(bath, stories, prayer, cuddles—15–30 minutes max) - Limit screen time 1–2 hours before bed
- Make their room cozy: Dark, cool, and quiet
- Avoid big meals or sugary snacks close to bedtime
Nap Know-How
- Most 3–4-year-olds still nap once a day (1–2 hours)
- Naps help improve focus and reduce crankiness
- If your child resists napping, offer quiet rest time instead
Signs of Not Enough Sleep
- Tantrums or crankiness
- Trouble waking up in the morning
- Hyperactivity or lack of focus
- Falling asleep outside of bedtime/naptime
Remember
Every child is unique. If your child seems well-rested, alert, and happy during the day, they’re probably getting enough sleep. But if you’re unsure, consult your pediatrician.
